CENSUS

Can we count you in?

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States. The U.S. Constitution mandates that this occur every 10 years. The Arc Eastern Connecticut is a member of the 2020 Census’ Complete Count Committees program. We’re encouraging EVERYONE to participate in the upcoming census.

Here’s why:

It’s important! An accurate count of who’s living here can influence how much funding an area receives for important social programs—including services for people with IDD. The number of state representatives is also determined by the number of residents in a given area. When everybody participates in a census, we’re sure of getting the funding that should be coming to us!

A little nervous? Don’t be!

The Census is CONFIDENTIAL. The Census Bureau is prohibited by law from disclosing ANY of your personal information to ANY other state or federal agency. It shares numbers, not names, to aid in the appropriate distribution of federal funds for health care, education, employment, infrastructure, etc.

Participating is EASY

Beginning on March 12, 2020 you’ll start receiving notices in the mail on how to respond to the Census. For the first time, people will be able to respond anytime, anywhere — online from any device, or by mail or phone. You’ll get repeat reminders until around July.

What does the Census ask?

  • The number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020

  • Whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented, or occupied without rent

  • A phone number for a person in the home

  • The name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home

  • Whether each person is of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin (there are some write-in areas for those who wish to self-identify as other than these categories)

  • The relationship of each person to a central person in the home

Do I have to answer all the questions?

No, but it’s helpful if you do.  You may skip questions if you wish, but a Census worker may follow up with a phone call.

When with the complete Census data be released?

December 31, 2020.
