The Arc ECT’s Farm Stand and Aquaponics facility pairs an expanding indoor aquaponics system with a 20,000-square foot outdoor garden and roadside farm stand to sell produce to the community. The project provides year-round training opportunities, leading to competitive-wage retail, culinary and farming jobs. Participants learn how to cultivate and grow vegetables in both a traditional and aquaponic environment. They’re trained in soil analysis, companion planting, crop rotation, pest/disease control, organic fertilizers, harvesting methods, and specific crop characteristics. They also sell the produce at The Arc’s successful Farm Stand and make recipe recommendations to customers.
Grants from area foundations have allowed us to expand the growing capacity in our aquaponics facility, and we can now offer a variety of specialty greens and herbs to the public as well as local farm-to-table restaurants.
A partnership with the Town of Ledyard has allowed the Farm Stand to expand its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project, which offers families to purchase shares of produce and receive ½ bushel of fresh vegetables weekly during the growing season. These expansions have provided additional opportunities for people with IDD to train and work in these fast-growing fields. The variety of agricultural projects helps participant employees gain a wide range of knowledge and skills, positioning them for many types of competitive farm, restaurant, and customer service positions.
