DENVER THEATER GROUP CHALLENGES MISCONCEPTIONS.

The rights of people with disabilities are under threat everywhere you look. Many recent developments have raised concerns within the disability community. From AI-driven decision-making to new work requirements for Medicaid and moving special education responsibilities out of the Department of Education.  However, a theater group in Denver is working to challenge misconceptions about disability and disability rights, helping to create thought provoking conversations when faced with making changes that affect so many in the disability community.

This month, the group is premiering 504: The Musical. The title refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the play revisits the protests that helped advance the disability rights movement. I hope this production is successful and can eventually be adapted so that other theater companies across the country can stage it as well.
