Helping People Express Individuality in a Group Home

The goals of The Arc Eastern Connecticut’s Residential Program are focused on providing a family-like atmosphere within each home, empowering each resident to make positive decisions about themselves and their living environment. Group Homes share common spaces and facilities but each of the residents have their own private and personal space to live in.

The Arc ECT recently received federal and state funding to help improve the Group Home environment of our residents. One of the ways we support people to express their individuality in a group home setting is to encourage them to personalize their living spaces — whether that be choosing their own décor such as a specific color for their walls, or by adding simple, but life-enhancing additions like a paper towel holder. “It’s seems so basic, but these sort of decorations really do help make a house a home,” said CEO Kathleen Stauffer. “It’s important that people with IDD get to personalize their living spaces the same way you or I do.”
