Smart Ideas for Independent Living

Supportive Living is a rapidly growing service area, with new generations of people with IDD and families eager to take advantage of this nimbler, more flexible model for housing. In this service model, participants live independently in their own apartment equipped with assistive technology —devices and equipment designed to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of participants in a safe and secure environment.

Technologies that assist participants can include smart devices such as security panels, motion detectors, panic buttons, but most critical is Remote Supports, which is a two-way communication system allowing direct support professionals (DSPs) to assist individuals remotely. Assistive technology is any type of device that helps promote independent living.” said Michelle Torres, Program Director. “With Remote Supports, we’re able to have a two-way conversation and check in with participants without being there in person.”

With the help of the Department of Developmental Services of Connecticut (DDS), The Arc ECT is able to provide the best resources and services for independent living — based on an individual’s needs and wants — and empower them with the best opportunities to live their best lives. “Just because you have a disability doesn’t mean that you have to stay with your family, or be in a group home. Programs like this showcase a person’s abilities to live just like anyone else.”
