Why The Arc ECT Is the Best Choice for Your Loved One

The Arc Eastern Connecticut was created to advocate and support people with IDD and their families. IDD is an acronym for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. There are more than 8 million Americans with IDD, with approximately 46,000 in Connecticut. It is important to understand that the term “IDD” is not a one-size-fits-all. At The Arc ECT, each person benefits from personalized, comprehensive care to address their individual needs and wants.
Intellectual Disability (ID): Limits in intellectual functioning (such as learning, reasoning, and problem-solving) and adaptive behavior (everyday social and life skills) that start before age 18 or 22.
Developmental Disabilities (DD): A broader category of lifelong physical or mental conditions — such as autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome — that begin during the developmental stage and impact daily life.
Combined Use (IDD): Organizations and agencies use IDD as shorthand when planning services or support for individuals who have one or both conditions.
For more than 75 years, The Arc ECT has provided an unparalleled level of care for people throughout Connecticut, providing a variety of person-centric resources and support services that touch every aspect of a person’s life. These resources include housing, healthcare, employment, education, arts programs and more, by empowering them with the best opportunities to live their best life possible.
“At The Arc ECT, it’s not just about providing subsistence services for people with IDD, our mission is to advance opportunities, to ensure inclusion and equality — and make sure they are being seen and heard within the community as equals.” said CEO Kathleen Stauffer.
